"The Genie in Your Genes" by Dawson Church, Ph.D.

Epigenetic Medicine and the New Biology of Intention

By Chris Dunmire, CurrentLiving.com

Some months ago I was listening to the Hay House Radio archives and came across the June 12, 2007 podcast of Crystal Andrus's radio show titled "The Genie in Your Genes" which featured an interview with guest author Dawson Church, Ph.D. and a discussion about his new book, The Genie in Your Genes: Epigenetic Medicine and the New Biology of Intention (Elite Books, 2007).

Having recently finished reading Valerie Hunt's Infinite Mind, I was especially intrigued by the show's description:

"Imagine there is something you could do in just four minutes every morning that would increase your energy all day long. Imagine if those same four minutes boosted your immune system and protected you from disease for up to seven hours. Join Crystal and bestselling author Dawson Church, Ph.D., to learn how to trigger over 100 genes that dramatically affect your immune system and your resistance to disease."

After listening to the show I was primed to learn more about "epigenetic medicine" and the exciting research detailed — and what it potentially means for each of us related to our physical and emotional health and well-being. To quote from the books' back cover, "Epigenetics — control of genes from outside the cell — is a brand-new branch of science that promises a revolution and health and happiness."

I'll note here that I am a new learner in the realms of holistic healing and energy medicine and have only begun to scratch the surface in my personal reading and research on these fascinating subjects. The study of genetics and all that it entails is quite complex to me, and I'm not predisposed to the excavation of deep scientific study and the mental grasping of the finer points of DNA and genes. That being said, I am still very interested in understanding and benefiting from the knowledge and proven discoveries of the mind-body connection, which is why I found the information in this book invaluable to my research.

As a primer to what Church hopes to accomplish with The Genie in Your Genes, I'll quote from page 46:

"We are starting, as a society, to notice the provocative research showing the effects our thoughts and emotions have on our genes. 'Science goes where you imagine it,' says one researcher, and leading-edge therapies are now imagining science going in the direction of some of the powerful, safe, and effective new therapies that are emerging. Hundreds of thousands of people are dying each year, and millions more are suffering, from conditions that might be alleviated by epigenetic medicine. This book is an attempt to present this new research in a user-friendly manner that allows its power to connect with everyday experience, and to explore the potential it holds for creating massive health and social changes in our civilization in a very short time."

The sixteen chapters and multiple appendixes in this book are an eye-opening journey that bridges the seen with the unseen of our bodies through facts, studies, and compelling evidence that turns around the argument that "your DNA is your destiny."

In an easy-to-follow format, Church takes us through a graspable discussion (especially for us creative right-brainers) through "The Malleable Genome", "Consciousness as Medicine", "Relief Therapy", and "Energy Psychology" and touches on electrical medicine, energy medicine's ancient roots, rapid cellular signaling, subatomic alchemy, emotional freedom techniques (EFT), and dozens of other sub-topics that help illustrate and explain the intrinsic web work and natural networking between all of our human biological and electromagnetic elements. We are enlightened on how perfectly all of our systems work together to create our wonderful, harmonious selves.

By the time I finished reading Church's The Genie in Your Genes (and thoroughly compared what I learned with what I knew from my own health experiences), I was more convinced that the Mind, Body, Spirit connection is real and the immense power we have to influence our health and well-being through our thoughts and intentions is very exciting.

If you can't buy a copy of this book for yourself, please borrow it from a friend or check it out from your local library. The information will be life-altering for you. Meanwhile, you can learn more about about epigenetic medicine and Dawson Church's work at the Soul Medicine Institute at www.SoulMedicineInstitute.org. •
